Vintage Hockey Jerseys

The National Hockey League sweaters or "jerseys" are in a league of their own. In my opinion, nothing comes close to the glory that they bring to a team. They are unique, gorgeous, vibrant, and universal. In Canada, they call the hockey jerseys "sweaters" which I think is very cool. It adds to the unique factor I just mentioned because every other sports league in the world calls them a jersey or a kit. Over the years, there have been many different companies in charge of creating the National Hockey League's sweater or jersey. Some of these companies are Koho, Starter, Reebok, CCM, Adidas, and next in line are fanatics. With all these different companies in charge of making the uniforms every year, with teams relocating, and with expansion teams, we got to see some amazing vintage jerseys fade out of existence but are beloved in our heart. When I was looking into this, I found an article that decided to discuss some of these amazing jerseys. The article is called "Remember The Golden Days Of The NHL With Vintage Hockey Jerseys" by Johnny McKenzie. While I was reading this, one quote stuck out to me. "Vintage hockey and NHL jerseys jerseys are all the rage across the United States and Canada these days. And not only are they popular, they are a big business too." (McKenzie) That stuck out to me a lot because it is very true. Being a student in college, going out I would see some pretty cool vintage NHL jerseys whether it would be at a bar or a party. I still remember the one I loved the most I saw in public was the inaugural Mighty Ducks of Anaheim jersey that was based off the movie "The Mighty Ducks." There tends to be a lot of vintage jerseys at NHL games as well. Fans love to show that they have been supporting the team for a while. There is no better opportunity to do that while attending your team's game with a jersey that could have been past down in your family since the 1980's. Although teams do not sell vintage jerseys, you can find them online whether it would be on eBay, DhGate, Amazon, or even the Facebook Marketplace. Now, with the current jersey producer of the National Hockey League being Adidas, they have created a line of jerseys that the teams wear a few times a year called the "Reverse Retro" jerseys. Adidas understands the fans heavily miss the vintage uniforms, so they tried to incorporate them into today's game with a modern twist added to them. What Adidas did was look into every NHL franchise's past uniforms from eras like the 90's 80's and so on. After that, they took inspiration from the jersey they wanted, and then they added a modern twist to said uniform. Although this idea is very thoughtful, it just does not have the same feel as seeing a vintage NHL jersey coming back to life. I do not think any form of new jersey will be able to recreate the warmth and excitement a vintage NHL jersey brings to the game and to the fans. Another quote by McKenzie that truly stuck out to me was "These vintage NHL hockey jerseys are not just clothing. They are artifacts from a long gone era, when all of our hockey heros were still in the league for the fun of playing ice hockey." (McKenzie) Understanding that jerseys are attached to eras is a great concept to understand. For example, the era in the 90's where the Pittsburgh Penguins had two of the most prolific players of that era. Those players are Jaromír Jagr and Mario Lemieux. These two players were an elite dynamic duo that won back to back Stanley Cups. What is something almost everybody remembers about that team? That would be the gorgeous Emperor Penguin jerseys that they would wear while dominating the league. The jerseys are a part of history that will always be there. Vintage NHL jerseys also represent locations that do not have the same team anymore. One of the most iconic jerseys in the National Hockey League history is the Minnesota North Stars with their gorgeous color scheme of yellow, green and white. The North Stars relocated to Dallas, becoming the Dallas Stars. Since then, Minnesota has received a new franchise named the Minnesota Wild. Even though Minnesota fans love their Wild, none of their fans will ever forget their glorious North Stars that were there before the wild. Wild fans to this day still show up to games repping the North Star jerseys and they do it frequently. Adidas noticed this and made the Reverse Retro jersey for the wild as a spin off of the North Star jerseys. It is the same Wild logo, just with the North Star colors. It is probably the best Reverse Retro in the league. The final quote that stuck out to me was "But when you throw on one at your favorite NHL or any hockey event or on a date, you'll feel ten times what you spent."(McKenzie). This stuck with me because it is true. My father sent me and my brother to a Blackhawks game not too long ago. He let me wear a jersey he bought in the 80's that was even considered "vintage" at the time. When you wear the vintage jersey, you feel in touch with the team's history. People came up to me and complimented on what I was wearing, and it was a very cool feeling. I think NHL vintage jerseys are worth every penny, not only because they have become a rarity, but also because how amazing they make you feel upon wearing one. Overall, vintage National Hockey League jerseys are truly one of a kind. NHL teams should look into releasing some vintage jerseys or have a special vintage night for their fans to experience. History is a gorgeous part of the game that should never be lost or forgotten.
